Dr. Trompaloglio and the disorientating case of Feick Thrydee
A downloadable fintogioco
This is a fintogioco [made-up italian word for ‘faux-game’] imagined during the Game Mockup Jam and somehow inspired by its third optional theme: “We are in 3d, but actually it's all just cleverly painted”.
Dr. Trompaloglio and the disorientating case of Feick Thrydee is a non-existent first-person 3D hidden object adventure about the weird story of an art critic and his obsession for a mysterious author of three-dimensional Trompe-l'œil paintings.
The Story:
Feick Thrydee: this is the signature of the person who is spreading chaos in the world of art. While many see Feick’s paintings as simple two-dimensional, even mediocre works, someone is completely obsessed with them: this someone is our main character, no less than Doctor Definitus Dimensio Trompaloglio, a once famous expert dealing with serious cases of daydreaming. Probably nobody is going to believe him, but where other observers see flat canvas, he starts to find shapes, as if he could walk inside the frames. He soon discovers that those pieces are actually spatial puzzles, perspective riddles waiting to be solved. It’s not a surprise that meandering questions begin to appear in Definitus’ mind: is there a particular meaning behind these artworks? Why do they seem so specifically addressed to him? Are they trying to… Communicate?
The main character:
The game:
A series of increasingly convoluted levels punctuated by moments of story, dialogues and exploration.
The levels - some examples:
- find the correct 3D shapes that match the correspondent 2D objects in the painting and their exact point of view in this game of perspective(s).
[public domain painting: Vanity and trompe-l'œil by Jean François de le Motte] - find correct 3D shape representing the item of the level, spotting the differences among many representations of the same object. But be careful not to make more than three mistakes (you don’t want to ruin your reputation as a professional critic!).
- other ideas: zoom on the paintings to find the two-dimensional items hidden in 3D clusters; find the only correctly-textured shape to fill the hole in the artworks; conduct interviews to not-so-inanimate objects to discover which ones are secretly three-dimensional (!); and much more!
